While it's understandable why he did it, I cannot agree with his actions, nor the lack of a harsher punishment.
The fact that it was "less brutal...... than the tactics of Saddam's men in 1991", does nothing to excuse the violation of military law, or his oath as an officer.
As soon as we cross the line, even by the smallest degree, to their method and tactics, we lose the purpose and justification ( if any) of the war.
A further danger is the effect on world an Iraqi public opinion, are we better than what they had, if our officers commit war crimes, violate the Geneva convention, with the apparent blessing of their superiors? |
