You won't find an lcd that's true 1080i since that would require the lcd to display 1920x1080 it would actually be 1080p. Most lower cost lcd's are 1366x768 which is diplayed as 720p (1280x720 with a bit of overscan). Many of these lcd's will convert a 1080i signal, but that's not technically the same as actually displaying 1080i

As for the 1080i vs. 720p argument,
1920 x 540 (1080 lines interlaced) = 1036800 pixels of resolution

1280x720 = 921600 pixels of resolution.

Strictly speaking this isn't exactly correct, but it gives you the basic concept, the two resolutions are close enough that I don't think one can honestly say ones better than the other.
