Setting up and hosting a web forums is the easy part. The hard part is the maintenance and security.
I am the webmaster of my gaming website for my guild. Were closing in on about 10, 000 members and nearly 10 million page hits. Because its a game, and games can be competitive we get alot of people that hate us. Our number 1 priority is uptime and we are often the victim of people trying to hack our site. We have alot of things custom coded into the site to prevent it (all hand coded by myself and one other guy).
Overall bieng a mod/admin sux. Your work goes unnoticed, unrewarded for extended periods of time. The only person that really notices is yourself when you give yourself a pat on the back. I give any mod/admin on any of these hardware site alot of props for hanging in there for as long as some of them do. Its not easy keeping a board running and healthy.
