A phone cable is made up of 1-3000 pairs of copper wires, a pair (2) wires is needed to make a phone line work. One wire is Tip the other is Ring, ...trans and receive. The pair carries -48vdc to power your phone and when it rings a Ringing Generator at the Central Office or remote switch pumps in a low ampere 105vac 30hz pulse current over top of the -48vdc current.
A wet pair is when the lines have water in them, which typical cause static, grounding and sometimes a little cross-talk(induction). You can play hell to get even low frequency RF thru a wet pair, let alone the higher frequency DSL and T-Span service to work. |
