I've been lucky enough that the controller board went out and I replaced it with a "spare" and the thing worked fine after that. Tiny fragments of just about anything inside the drive will cause catastropic failure.
I remember one time taking the cover off a HDD and then touching it with a screw driver while it was plugged in and accessing (NOT RECOMMENDED!) Yeah...it didn't last long at all.
