MANCHESTER, Conn. (AP) - A very tough dog remains on the loose despite police efforts to shoot it, strike it with a police cruiser and zap it with a stun gun.
Police said the dog and a second pit bull, which was injured and captured, posed a risk to people in a public park Wednesday.
The man versus canine confrontations began Wednesday morning when two police officers went to help an animal control officer after receiving a report that the dogs were charging her at Center Springs Park.
The dogs again charged, and one of the officers fired his gun in self-defense, police said. The gunfire didn't stop the dogs, which turned and ran toward a town recreation building at 100 Lodge Drive, where the summer camp was going on inside, police said. Several more officers were sent to the park.
An officer pulling into the parking lot then saw both animals running near a young child and an adult who were walking.
The officer struck the dogs with his police car. One dog was knocked down, while the second one ran into a wooded section of the park. The dog that was incapacitated was in stable condition.
Police found the second dog in a yard near the park. Officers used a Taser gun, which fires electrically charged probes. The guns can typically transmit 50,000 volts of electricity.
Still, the animal was able to run at the officers before fleeing again.
