Sounds like the stuff I want is only available as an online stream now! That doesn't help the ride home!!!

WXRK: Rob On The Rock
"There's more K-Rock to love than ever before," says WXRK (92.3 K-Rock)/New York PD Rob Cross. He's not kidding, either. WXRK has adopted a loopy "rock of ages" approach on its terrestrial signal (from Nine Inch Nails to Van Halen) while simultaneously launching a new music-intensive version of its former self on the Internet.
"This is a way for us to put the new music on the new media," Rob told us, "and leave the older stuff on the older media and really get to people who are more likely to use the radio as an appliance since the new music crowd is probably on the new media anyway.
"We're not a Mainstream Rock station," he adds. "We're not quite an Active Rock station, and I suppose we're not an Alternative station. What do you call a station that plays Led Zeppelin and Weezer? That's why we came up with 'Great Rock, Period,' because it gives us the freedom to do what we need to do.
"It's sort of like Jack with rock boundaries. Which is kind of a weird thing, but why can't you hear 'The Distance' by Cake next to 'Shot in the Dark' by Ozzy Osbourne? Who's to say that there should be a rule against that?"

WXRK: Big Shift In The Big Apple
Oh come on, you weren't really surprised by WXRK (92.3 K-Rock)/New York's mutation into ... uh ... whatever they are. After all, at the end of February, Infinity Chairman/CEO Joel Hollander hinted at an all-out format switch once Howard Stern left the airwaves. No, Howard hasn't left, but you know what I mean.
Just last week, in fact, Mr. Stern himself suggested an imminent move in the Jack direction. Sure enough, within a few hours of the "adjustment," K-Rock listeners were treated to a decidedly Jackesque segue-way when Bon Jovi followed The Ramones. Eeek.
PD Rob Cross and MD Mike Peer remain on board. The new WXRK is currently running jockless, but the entire airstaff will reportedly return next Monday.
So, Alt fans in the Big Apple still have the online "K-Rock 2," WXRK's "evil twin with a godless bloodlust for weird new music," right? Sure, absolutely, I buy that one. Either way, I look forward to another round of teeth-gnashing amidst proclamations that the Alternative format is dead. A more logical explanation can be gleaned from Arbitron's fall survey, wherein WXRK's 18-34 adult ranking dropped from No. 1 in morning drive to No. 7 in middays to No. 10 in the afternoon. |
