The Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) can consume more than a ton of food per day, but does not feed for up to 6 months while at its winter breeding grounds . During the winter months, between late November and April, 4,000 to 6,000 Humpback whales come to Hawaii, to mate and give birth, migrating from the chilly waters of Alaska.
