Oh ya, its a dial that turns about 180 degrees. The knob has a good feel to it also. Instead of building a switch it might be easier to just relocate the knob to the front. Drill out a un-used external bay and there you go.... really simple change.
Also worth noting, in games where stealth is really important (and hearing your oponents) I sometimes turn the fan to lower speeds. At around 3000 rpm you can't hear the CPU fan over my Antec 430W True Power Supply. Temps still remain well within the "safe range."
