yes, it is related to opening applications. my abit hardware monitor really shows minimal voltage swings indicating things are very stable. however, my baseline PSU fan rpm is somewhere around 2500 at a case temp of 32-33 (not great but ok), much higher than quoted in your review. no noise from the speakers. strictly psu issue here.

the whining is in response to cpu usage. when it hits 20-30% a noticeable whine in the fan speed occurs. when it hits 100% it roars to 2800 rpm. i think even the baseline rpms are a little high, considering the case temp. on initial bootup the fan is nice and quiet and then just gradually increases up to a very audible 2500rpm or so at 32C. it doesnt leave much room for cpu use surges.

now imagine this up and down whining occuring with pratically every app, mp3, etc off & on all night long. incredibly annoying.

any ideas or suggestions? motherboard? psu itself? if not, i am ready to sell my system piece by piece and go shuttle SFF version 2 units with 32db. i know they arent perfect but anything is better than this whining and sighing. real distracting. please help! Bang Head
