I'm not sure who has it right now, but I could sure use it!!!

I built a guy a real nice machine 2 years ago and RAID 0'ed a pair of 100 gig WDSE's. Been working like a champ. Took him his new 3000+ NEO 2, X800 PRO gaming machine today and right in front of my eyes, Winblows came up with:

"can't friggin write to C:\system volume information\blah\blah\yourso\screwed\quitwhining\true.dat"

Well the 5 or so messages cleared and I went on to do some checking. Finished and rebooted to:

(not quoted for accuracy)

ARRAY BORKED!!! flashing

ARRAY 1 200 gig is toast
ARRAY 2 100 gig is offline

Soooooo... Since this is now his business machine, I'll stick the drives (if they still work) in RAID 1.

running raid 0 as the primary drives for business is not a good idea (unless you have a substancial backup system and spares on hand)

Yea, I gotta agree with T-Shirt. RAID 0 is just for performance, and not a good thing on a machine that holds important info. It's actually better to use JOBD if you want the storage room... at least then you stand a chance of getting data if a HDD goes belly up.

RAID 1 is best option though... Any drive head south to be Jose's cabana boy and your not borked. (And while being borked SOUNDS like fun, it's not all that much fun.)

The RAID 0 machine has been his gaming machine for the last two years.

Now that I built him a new gamer, it will become his business machine.

His old P4 business machine is being put out to pasture.

I JUST backed up all of his now dead RAID 0 files a week ago!!!

However, his wife dumped all thier Virgin Islands cruise pics on the machine after I backed it up... so they are gone.

His response to that was... "Guess I'll have to go back and get some new pics!!!"

Talk him into RAID 0+1!! Grin

I may take the one 40GB drive out of my HTPC (needs more room for DiVX), and then I'll be able to do it on my A64 system, which has 2 40GB in RAID 1, and one spare 40GB ready for hot swapping...

I AM THE KEEPER OF THE MAGIC RAID WAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I deleted all the bogus arrays, recreated a new Stripe array just to see if I could salvage the Carribean Pics.

IT WORKED!!!!!!!!! The machne booted like normal. Must have been something to do with a corrupted MBR on one of the drives.

Pics and data saved, time to change to a Mirror setup.
