AMD or Intel??

Many new strides have been made in the processor area of computing. AMD's 64bit technoligy, on DIE memory controllers, Intel's Hyper Threading......

Some of our members have made the switch to 64bit computing. WHY? Is it for the power it contains or bragging rights? Do any of our members run the new (and expensive) P4 "Extreme Edition"? Again, is it for bragging or power??

And right now, Just the XP's (Well my main system is MP's but same thing). I'm waiting for an upgrade to the OS before I jump into the 64 bit world. While the new A64/Operton's are faster, until you are running a 64 bit OS & Applications you will not get the most from it. So I have decied to wait until probably the Sept/Oct 05 time frame for my next major system upgrade. (However if I come across a really good deal on a board/processor it might change... Laughing

)

I voted AMD Athlon 64, thanks to my A64 3200+. But, I also have a Intel P4 2.6C, an Intel Celeron D 2.66, and a VIA EPIA M10000 (!GHz).

Cheeze... I have seen Athlon 64 3000+ chips (either socket 754 or 939) for $150!! Check ZipZoomFly and Monarch! And, don't forget that socket 754 board I said you could try... Grin

I am still running my 2500+ Barton and am pretty happy with it. I will upgrade to an A64 sometime next year hopefully. AMD still seems to offer more bang for the buck and from what I have seen the 64 bit CPU's out perform everything so I see no reason to change back to Intel

I voted A64 though I am in possesion of a Pentium M, Athlon XP (2), and a A64.

The M I've been happy with in my laptop, very good performance and good power usage. My XP's are the workhorses for the everyday and server apps as they are cheap and can OC good (My main rig is a T-bred Rev B).

The Athlon 64 though kills anything else out there I see, I like the thermals and the integrated memeory controller really does help out a lot. Socket 939 took long enough in coming but I've been happy with the results. Only thing I don't care for is the new chips that came out, renaming the FX-53 to a A64 4000+ in the 939 arena wasn't too cool IMO but I'll stick with the platform and make sure my next system is another 939 A64.

My vote was cast with my old system (gone now) in mind. AMD 2500+ Barton. At the time it was the most bang for the buck (heck, it may still be in contention for that).

All of my systems have been AMD, I don't think Intel can come close to the price/performance factor.

I did have a test system with a P4 Prescott 2.8E, that sucker ran hot.

I'm leaning towards the A64 on my next build. No need for the 64bit....just moving to the next generation. A little future proofing.

I am going to jump all over NF4 and socket 939 stuff. I don't do MB and Processor upgrades that much and figure I need to go pretty cutting edge.

It's not for the 64 bit, its not for more speed, mainly its for NATIVE SATA with NCQ, PCIe, and lots more goodies.

I don't want to invest a boatload of money on an AGP vid card when PCIe is slated to take over.

I don't want to invest in a MB that doesn't do at least 8 SATA II disks, because IDE is dead. Even Opticals will be SATA soon!!!

I'm confusing myself...
