I found http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html while searching for some CPU comparisons. It's a little fascinating that there's an Opteron at the top of the list with such high marks. It's unfortunate that there's no associated link to see how they obtained the results on some of those tests (mobo, ram, etc).

It took 32 cores(8way AMD) to beat an 8 core(dual CPU) Xeon..

13,600(32x2200mhz cores) versus 9792(8x3200mhz cores) points.

Theres nothing astonishing about that. Even though I prefer AMD, I think AMD should go hide in a corner for such lackluster performance.

No way to know for sure if AMD is lagging as far behind as you think. You'd need to compare cost. If the AMD system cost the same price as the Intel system does, and while using more CPU's and scores higher....

AMD still wins. ROI BABY!

Update:

AMD CPU: $414.94 x8 = $3319.52

Intel CPU: $1,340.00 x2 = $2680.00

Over all... AMD = Lower Cost for better performance, as to beat the AMD system you'd need to add another CPU (for a score of about 14.688) and the cost would be $4020.00. And for that price you could almost add 2 more AMD CPU's which would give you a score of about 17.000.

Very useful link. I'm actually thinking of upgrading my Pentium 4 3.2Ghz 641, 2MB L2 cache processor soon. But with a limited budget, I may get a Pentium Dual-Core E2200. It runs 2.2Ghz, has 2MB L2 cache. I may just OC it when gaming
