I have been using Avast for about 2 yrs on my XP x64 system because when I first got x64 it was the only one that supported it.

Lately however it has been causing me issues, that include locking up my system and rebooting it when ever it does any updated. Kinda annoying.

So I just did some searching because I was going to go get AVG, but I found this: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2135092,00.asp that shows both Avast & AVG provide a lower detection rate than AntiVir. So I decided to get it a try.

Anyone have any experience with it?

Never heard of it. I am using a free one year - three PC - subscription to McAfee's full suite (thanks to Scottrade). Kinda annoying, but it seems to be effective.

Mcafee doesn't support XP x64. I have 12 licenses of it otherwise. Grrrrr.

HAHAHAHAHA

EC, this is the last time I tell you. Go to www.kaspersky.com and get the trial. There is nothing better.

Did you read the link to the article?

Kaspersky had a 97.64% detection rate, and AntiVir has a 99.42% detection rate. And is free (which is good because I'm going to be ditching x64 hopefully soon... tired of all the hassles).

hmm, from the numbers it seems better, but with the free version you are missing out on these features that I know Kaspersky includes:

Protection against spyware and adware
Special protection against email viruses (POP 3)
Fast updates through the Premium server (KAV has hourly updates)
WebGuard to surf and download safely
Inclusive firewall
Antispam and proactive antiphishing

I did not find anywhere that it said its updating frequency. Which might be more important than detection rate on new bad stuff that spreads around.

Here are some comparisions:

Compare KAV
Compare KIS

1 - Have other programs for
2 - Don't use POP3
3 - Assume it means they have faster bandwidth servers for paying customers - rest get to fight over the dsl connection Grin
4 - Errrr... Don't even know what that means. However I do use several different plugins on FF to eliminate a lot of the risk.
5 - Have a real firewall.
6 - Have another program, and not stupid enough to get caught by phishing.

However... I'm starting to get PO'd at the McAfee rate.... specially considering I BOUGHT 12 licenses of it already to replace the MS one I have.
