Can I put this card in my Windows x64 XP machine until I switch over to Vista? Does it just run in DX9 in that case, or not at all?

Yes, it will run DX9.

I'm running my Athlon 64 2.2(2.59) with a 6800GT(410, 1.1ish). Is it better for me to get a 512mb 7950GT and a new dual core processor, like an Opti 175, or to dump everything into an 8800GTS? The only graphics intense stuff I am doing is games, for the most part. I thought things might bottleneck at the processor with the 8800GTS.

What are you're plans for system upgrades?

The 8800 is much more "future proof", but as you know all video cards are out of date by the time they hit the shelf.

Unless you TRUELY need the 8800, I would wait to get a DX10 card when more are on the market.

First to market = First to set the price HIGH

They are great cards, I really want one but not sure about the premium to get the first gen DX10 cards....

Yeah, I definitely want to get Vista, and go with the DX10, but I could probably hang with the 7950GT until the next generation of the DX10 cards come out, and for the time being the new processor would be really helpful, I think. I need to get more memory too, but don't want to go AM2 yet because I can't buy everything at once. The 7950GT should still perform well for a while, right? No DX10 games even out yet.
