Since there are likely no options to overclock the system, I would get the e6600 and stick with the stock DDR2 667Mhz memory. I would however make sure you have at least 2GB of ram, even if that means only getting the e6400. Although, you could likely buy the system with 512mb of ram and upgrade it yourself through another vendor and save some $$$$

It will have 2GB RAM and a 256MB nVidia GeForce 7900 GS. Would you get Vista?? Only way to get XP is to get a XPS710 for $500 more.

What software are you running? Include the versions please Grin

I've officially converted both of my machines over to Vista and have not had any issues (other than sound). Sound on one of my machines gets garbled after about 30 minutes, using a USB headset I don't have that problem though *shrug*

Biggest thing is to make sure the software versions you have are compaitble with Vista.

Photoshop for example, I believe you have to have CS2 (aka PS 9) for it to run under Vista. That's going to be the common issue, makign sure you have 100% most recent version.

Software shouldn't be an issue. Most of what I do is MS Office and MP3 management. As for video editing, that's if I get ambitious enough to dump the video I've shot of my two kids onto my PC someday. When I do, then I'll get the software to author DVD and would make sure it's Vista compatible.

K, then IMHO you shouldn't have any issues with Vista (again making sure any software you use for MP3 managment works under Vista).

Check your printer for correct drivers for it. That's where the biggest issue will be, drivers for any existing peripheals.

Oh, also if you have a logitech mouse, DO NOT get the SetPoint 3.3. Get SetPoint 3.1. 3.3 has the old issue of the mouse pointer jumping across the screen...but the issue is not in 3.1 LOL

I just keep reading about how it slows down even the fastest systems...

I've not experienced that on either of my systems.

Even in games I've not had that issue. I know others have had that issue though.

Good maintenance is key. I defrag my systems every other day, have it to reboots in middle of night, etc. YMMV

XP is my OS of choice in 97% of systems you're going to be building.

You do however, have a fully capable Vista PC. If you really want to run Aero, go for it, but I can tell you from first hand experience that it's not that impressive. If I were you I'd stick with XP, there are huge performance drops in some applications on Vista.(Read: 80-99% Performance Drops from XP) While that won't be the case for most applications, I wouldn't be surprised if you ran into one or two that did.

Not sure how bound you are to windows, but beryl has some REALLY cool effects that you can get runnings on linux, and I'd be more than happy to point you in the right direction to get that working for you if you were so inclined. Chances are like most people though, you just want something that works. XP!

Considering XP is going to cost you more, Vista works for me! Grin

Go with Vista. The system you are getting should be able to handle it just fine. The 7900gs is an excellent video card and 2gb of ram will help as well. Also, either processor will be more than fast enough to run Vista.

highonv8splash is right though, Aero kind of got old really quickly.

Not to mention if you run one software title that doesnt works with Aero, it shutsdown the service for the entire computer.
