Quote:
Every 26 months, the Earth overtakes Mars on the inside track as they both orbit the Sun.

Every 15 to 17 years, this happens when Mars is closest to the Sun.

On 27 August this year they will pass at a distance of 55,760,000 km or 0.3727 AU (1 AU is the distance of the Earth from the Sun), closer than any time during the last 60,000 years.

Those of you with great digital cameras better take pics for us and post them Wink Smile

If you miss Mars Wed. EARLY morning (atl time), it should not make a difference if you take your long, pointless, stare the next night since the change in distance will not be too visibly different (unless you have a high-powered telescope)

You guys have not missed it yet. The other night was the night it was at it closest point to earth but it will be visible for about another 6 weeks if you still want to see it.
