I am looking to clone my boot drive in Windows XP 64-Bit. Does anyone know of a decent (maybe free) app?

I tried a bunch of 32-bit ones that work on my regular XP machines, but they won't run on 64-bit.

If it is easier... would taking my drive out, and attaching it to a 32-bit machine allow me to clone it properly?

See this is where my guide would have come in handy. What is this time thing you speak of??

Are you just trying to make a back up copy of the drive? Or move HDD's?

If so you can do it with out any utilities. Basics:

1) Convert HDD to dynamic disk
2) Mirror Partition(s)
3) Remove 2nd HDD
4) Break/remove mirror.

Only down side (if it's a concern for you) once disk is dynamic you can't install anything like Linux on it.

That sounds good, I'll try it tonight!

All I want is to move the OS partition to a different drive in the computer.

Thanks!

PC Stats just released an article on this...

http://www.pcstats.com/ArtVNL.cfm?articleID=418

Being 9 pages long makes me think they think it is more involved than your few steps! Laughing

(didn't read it yet, though).

They are talking about 3rd party apps:

Page 1: — Beginners Guides: Cloning WindowsXP
Page 2: Disk Cloning Software
Page 3: Part 1A: Installing a new drive for cloning
Page 4: Part 1A: Before and after the Cloning
Page 5: Part 1B: Cloning for a new computer
Page 6: Part 1B: Installing Drivers After Cloning
Page 7: Part2: Using Norton Ghost
Page 8: Part2: Using HDClone
Page 9: Part2: Using Ranish Partition manager

And my steps are very high level... but that is bascilly all there is too it. Trust me, I've done it on my own server when I wanted to upgrade my RAID array. So I did it from one RAID array to another. Grin

Thats another thing... I thought I had 6 or 8 SATA headers, but only have 4. Just got a fifth drive to test, so it means I can't get as close to 2TB of storage without an add in card! Laughing

You're talking about Mirroring in Windows, right?

I can only do Simple, Spanned, or Striped.

I even tried making partitions of equal size, but no dice.

Cheeze never came back to hold my hand and my drive still isn't copied! Laughing

But, some other forum said this is the only 64-bit app at this time:

What ever will you do without that much storage?

I don't know... Nothing! But ooh, does the 1TB SATA-II RAID 0 array benchmark nicely!!

That app I downloaded was worthless. It looked like it was making a backup, and I have some huge backup files on my drive, but they won't restore! Bang Head

I started over and reinstalled everything... Oh well!
