Google plans to hire programmers to improve OpenOffice.org, a demonstration of its affinity for open source initiatives and one the company believes also shows sound practical sense.

OpenOffice has its roots in Sun Microsystems' StarOffice suite of programs. Five years ago, Sun turned its proprietary software into an open-source project. Only recently, however, has the competitor to Microsoft's Office attracted serious attention.

Ahh, nothing like throwing a few bodies to stimulate business!

My question is this: What are they doing differently, as a company, that so many others tried to do during the .com bubble and failed at? I mean, Google seems to be doing everything right so far...and that's strange for a company. That, or their mistakes just aren't advertised as much as M$oft's

It's the slogan.

And then you have Microsoft.

CNET: So that would be the philosophical difference between Microsoft and what Google is up to at this point?

Gates: Well, we don't know everything they are up to, but we do know their slogan and we disagree with that.

Hence, I have a deep resentment of Microsoft. Crazy

My guess is that most would agree with you on that , but do you ever stop and wonder where we would be without Microsoft?

Don't belive Google's "motto". The rumors I hear, and the actions I see from them. They aren't any better than MS.

If OS X had never come out, I wouldn't touch a Mac with a 10 foot pole.
