Small Businesses Now Have A Private Cloud To Call Their Own To Protect, Access and Share Critical Business Data

CUPERTINO, CA — February 19, 2013 — Seagate Technology plc (NASDAQ: STX) today announced the company’s latest offering of network-attached storage (NAS) for the small office / home office (SOHO), remote mobile office (RMO) and Small Business space. To address the changing needs of a growing small business, Seagate Business Storage will come as a one-drive, two-drive and four-drive configuration, which range in capacities from 2TB to 16TBs.

For business collaboration and backup protection, this new Business Storage by Seagate provides a secure cost-effective alternative to cloud backup and online sharing services. The centralized backup of Business Storage, which is accessible by both Windows and Mac OSX operated computers, will take the guesswork out of providing an employee base with backup protection and easy sharing across both platforms. Designed to backup all PC and Mac computers in an organization to a single centralized location, this new NAS includes backup software for Windows machines and is also compatible with Apple’s Time Machine® for backup of Mac OSX computers.

Today’s small businesses have new challenges with even the smallest of organizations consisting of employees who may work remotely. In this not uncommon scenario, sharing of information in a secure manner becomes essential to a business’s success. Seagate Business Storage is essentially a private cloud, which would reside in a single office location, but is capable of providing access via both Android and iOS applications for mobile devices and a secure networked connection from any notebook. Additionally, for those important files that need an added ounce of protection, this new network attached storage also has the ability to provide hardware encryption for select files.

“Business demand for additional storage will continue to grow and the public cloud is not always the most cost effective or perceived securest option for small businesses,” said Liz Conner, senior research analyst for personal & entry level storage at IDC. “We will continue to see local network attached storage provide one of the best options for these growing business. Security, data redundancy, and remote access are all features that will play vital role in the near term as well as the foreseeable future.”

Business Storage is designed to maintain integrity of your data on the four-drive and two-drive solutions, by setting it up to provide redundant backups of the information stored on the device. Also, rotating a backup of data becomes an easy task with a Universal Storage Module (USM) slot that provides an efficient way to offload and rotate a backup copy off site. Simply slide a USM compatible drive into the slot to get faster transfer of data.

“Seagate has spent a lot of time understanding small businesses and their storage needs, which in many cases are unique to them,” said Scott Horn, vice president of Marketing for Seagate. “Seagate has designed this new networked attached storage to address the changing needs that a growing small business faces. We’re excited for our small business customers to get their hands on this innovative new product. We’ve added features that will give them additional flexibility in data access and workflow, along with the peace of mind that comes with the Seagate brand.”
