want to put dvd's (on hdd) in format that Media Center will like. What video format will give me the highest resolution, in comparison to DVD, and also maintain 5.1 sound, that WMP will play, mp4, avi, wmv, etc?

thx,
df

I'm not sure if Media Center will play MP4s. Never tried to be honest....

Probably DIvx would be the best, pretty sure it'll play them if you install the Divx codec.

Will Divx do 5.1 sound? pretty sure it will.

I can't actually find a program that will convert dvd files already on hdd to anything.... except .iso, which I s'pose I could mount on a virtual drive then convert to another format, I want to do it in one conversion though.

There are many programs that will convert DVDs on the hard drive to almost any format.

Imtoo and Magic DVD are two that come to mind.

DVD Shrink will let you rip movies to your hard drive in DVD formtat, and then you can just play them from the folders. I use Video LAN or Power DVD for playback, not sure about Windows Media Player playing from folders.

No, wmp does not play from dvd folders, unfortunately, I'm using power dvd also, I like that program. I was just trying to get the whole Media Center thing going, like so I could surf through South Park episodes, or movies, or whatever with the MCE remote, rather than mounting images, etc. cyberlink makes a remote, maybe I should just get that....
