Mind if I ask what video card you are currently using? Ram and CPU would also be of interest.

I wouldn't recommend putting a 6800GT (6600 maybe) in an AMD XP 1800 w/ 256mb of ram. I'm not saying it won't work, but much of the performance increase would be negated by the cpu/mem bottleneck.

If on the other hand you have something like a socket 939 mb w/A64 3200 and 1gb of ram, a 6800GT would be pretty sweet and you could probably hold off on PCIe for a little while.

If your system is something in the middle you've got to ask yourself how long before you upgrade? If it's 6 months or so, I'd go with a lower cost solution. If it's a year or more, you may want to spend the extra $$$ and get the 6800GT or equivalent.
