Nope, no probs with DVD stuff, he just needs a few things. He needs one for encoded DVDs, a DVD menu thingy, something to play DVDs with (I use MPlayer but Xine works too), and he'll be all set.
I play DVDs, rip DVDs, and as soon as my NEC 2500A gets here, I'll be writing DVDs.
Here's what I have in the way of DVD playback that might help your friend:
libdvdcss
libdvdnav
libdvdread
MPlayer or Xine
