I would wait for DDR3 to become more cheaper rather than investing in 4GB of DDR2 though.

I just purchased a 780i board instead of the 790i because I don't care to spend cash on DDR2. I already have 2GB of DDR2, so it's only an additional 2. As for games running slower on Vista I don't think it'll really be a problem since I'm running a Core 2 Duo 2.66Ghz with an Nvidia 9800 GX2 running a single 24" dispaly. I've wanted more ram to do more things such as when I'm running video editors. However with the still negative reactions, I'll skip it for now. Run XP until Windows 7 comes out or something. Hopefully that one will be somewhat decent, since Vista still doesn't have people behind it at all.

What are you going to use 4GB of ram for?

"VISTA"......Just to get it to run smoothly................... Grin

That would be my guess anyways..................... Yikes

LOL Nah, Vista runs smoothly on 1GB if you turn off Aero and some of the other UT features. Even with full disk encryption going, I have no problems using Vista on an enterprise class machine with 1GB of memory. Havn't rebooted since I loaded SP1 two weeks ago.

Then again, I'm not gaming on it either...just running MS Office type apps (and some other enterprise workflow apps).

Don't listen to them, if you have Vista, load it up and see how YOU like it. It's certainly not for everybody, it's not perfect, but it does run fine if you have new software/hardware. I"ve never been one to put my trust 100% in other people, I want to try it and make my own decision. Reading about others experience is good, but have to take them with a grain of salt as many have pre-conceived feelings...i.e. Linux is the greatest OS! MACs rule over all computers! Microsoft is the devil!

I fully agree that if he can get his hands on a copy to give it a try and see how he likes it.................. Grin

That exactly what I plan on doing, I mainly run Linux (Ubuntu 8.04 Beta) dual booting into Windows XP for gaming, but I'm getting a free copy of Vista from Microsoft for taking part in their Windows Feed Back Program, so I'm going to give it a shot just to see how I like it. I tried Vista back in the Beta trials and it wasn't all that bad, it was just hardware hungry and didn't like most of the software I was running at the time. So we'll see how it's improved performance over the past year or so.

If you're just going to Vista, you HAVE to make sure you put on SP1...there are many things that it resolves...Although it supposedly breaks some software applications too...

File transfer speed is greatly improved...which was a major complaint.

I'm thinking that MS is going to be shipping out the integrated SP1 version when it does ship, the last email from them stated that the ship date was at the end of this month.

Some of the PC magazines are saying that Vista was such a flop that many users will simply wait til 2010 when the new MS OS is released and upgrade from XP then.

It's funny, but I think MS did this same thing when XP was released. Lots of problems, hassles, drivers, etc, and then a service pack or 2 later and it's OK. I guess Ballmer is too greedy and wants to see his stock rise instead of learning from the past mistakes of MS and avoiding them.

You're right Kilamon...many people are going to do that. You're also right that XP had similar issues when it originally came out, so many people forget that LOL

If MS hadn't already announced Windows "Seven" then I think more people would be looking at Vista for the near future. I know where I work we have decided to back off migrating to Vista in the hopes that "Seven" will be ready before XP support ends. Doesn't mean we're stopping testing for Vista, just going from a SP1 + 6 Months roll-out to 2011 roll-out if "Seven" isn't there in time.

Warning: if you use a Creative sound card, you will hate Vista and might be tempted to punch your machine - that'll make you feel temporarily better.
