@ work currently we have 8 servers. the naming scheme is boring/generic. my boss said setup most of the servers when he took over the IT dept, but couldn't think of something creative to name the servers. [he just went generic - company initials (WA) then something descriptive of the server's role - ie: WAEX, WAMAIN, WAMK - exchange, main fileserver, and mk (our erp system)]

we are getting three new servers, and exchange should be getting an upgrade in the next year or two. So its my job to get a good naming scheme for our new servers and future servers.

mythology/gods - zeus, hermes, isis, etc
animals/fish - tomcat, bear, wolf - hammerhead, greatwhite, tigershark
astronomy - planets, constellations, etc
tv shows/cartoons - character names from various shows/cartoons
alcohol brands - bud, coors, sam adams - captmorgan, absolute, greygoose

Those are ok, but Im sure someone more creative can come up with something better...any of those creative people here?

Maybe neame them after all your beanie babies... I saw your collection, you should be able to pick out at least 8 names you like... Laughing

Or what about naming them after BB 'characters'? Grin

Where I work the servers are actually named after Star Wars things...

Name them after names of the great military ships in history.

I use the Simpsons,
My domain= Springfield
My server is APU
Different client desktops are different characters of the main family... homer, lisa, marge, etc.

Maggie is smaller/portable so she becomes the laptop...

Lots of characters and its easy to figure out what computer is what.

Jim

Or keep the name useful as to what the function of the system is.

But hey... I'm just one of those old boring IT guys.
