Adding new memory

I am currently looking to NEW memory because the memory should not be mismatched. Is it better to buy 2 one GB sticks of memory to equal 2 GB or 4 512MB of memory to equal 2GB. Which is faster? I have four available slots on my motherboard. Thanks!
