Depends, If you are capable of installing a heatsink on your processor, and aren't afraid to tug gently on the ATI sink, its easy. If you have never removed and installed a sink on your processor, You may want to have some help. Remember the video card can be the most expensive component in the case.
from one to ten huh? I'd give it a 5-6, 10 being almost impossible. |

I read your review on the Zalman ZM80C-HP and found it interesting.
I too have a Zalman maunted on a 9800 Pro.
I made some special modifications to my Zalman though.
I drilled a small hole in the heat sink, (center deep) on the GPU side and permently mounted a temp prob.
I get around 54C when surfing and between 59 and 61C gaming.
Not as impressive as your readings but I,m affraid more accurate.
Another thing about the ZM80C-HP, the temp stays pretty much the same no matter how much you over clock...nice!
Good artical.

Welcome to BigBruin.com Nutcracker
Thanks for the kind words!!! I do believe your temps may be more accurate. Although I'm not sure the difference in temps produced from a 9800 to a 9700.
Here is a shot of the same kind of mod you speak of only drilling a SLK947U. The thermocouple joint ended up being just millimeters worth of copper and AC thermal epoxy away from the center of the processor die.
I get some incredible temperature response and what I think is about the most accurate temp readings, not perfect, but the CHANGE in temps will be very accurate.
I tried to recreate all measurements the same in all tests. The actual temperatures moy be off, but the difference in them is very accurate. |

Thank for your speedy reply.
I have a (9700) in my other box. I plan on installing a ZM80C-HP, (and temp Rig) on this set-up as well. Although I don't expect the temp ranges to be that different, I am currius to see just exactly what they are.
I'll post my results when I get them.
Like you, I don't use Quick Silver epox, I may want to remove the prob if it fails. I do however use Quick Silver paste while securing in place with heat tape and tie wraps. This method works just as well I think.

I go through enough PC parts that this thermocouple will never fail before I have moved on to bigger/better/badder!!!
"J" type thermocouples are accurate to 700 deg F and will read through 1000 def F. This thermocouple will never die, hehehe. |
