Conclusion:
Rated at 5-5-5-18, the OCZ Technology PC2-8000 Platinum Edition 4GB DDR2 Kit is quite impressive in terms of timings, speed, and capacity. Running at 1000MHz it was able to outperform competition in the form of DDR2 from Patriot and DDR3 from OCZ Technology. While overclocked to 1080MHz it was even able to outperform the DDR3 kit running at 1333MHz.
While DDR3 might be the future of memory, DDR2 is far from dead. Modern AMD systems still rely on DDR2 memory 100%, and many current Intel systems do, too. DDR3 is still in its infancy and these benchmarks confirm that until DDR3 ramps up to much higher speeds the difference in performance doesn't really warrant a change.
While 4GB will probably be overkill for many users, and is only really accessible with Windows if you are running a 64-bit version of XP or Vista, this kit delivers for those ready for that much memory today. And since this kit is comprised of two 2GB modules, you will easily be able to go to 8GB of memory on a motherboard with four memory slots.
A search of PriceGrabber shows four retailers with this kit in stock, with prices starting around $120 (US). With a $20 rebate available, you could be looking at a high performance 4GB kit for under $100. While there may be slightly cheaper kits available, I would pay a little extra for the known performance, reliability, and warranty found with OCZ Technology memory.
Given the performance, price, and lifetime warranty, I award the OCZ Technology PC2-8000 Platinum Edition 4GB DDR2 Kit the rating of "Highly Recommended".
