Ultra Products X-Connect 2 550W PSU
February 22, 2006

The Basics:

Removing the power supply from the packaging you can give it a once over as you also check yourself out in the mirror like finish. The titanium finish is flawless, and while it doesn't impact the performance of the power supply, in many gaming machines you want your system to look good. Be careful while handling the power supply, your fingerprints will show up very easily. I did find it extremely easy to clean them off, so after completing the install a quick wipe with a soft cloth should take care of any fingerprints.

In this image you can see the modular plugs on the power supply. They are laid out so that similar plugs are together. On the far right, you have the 24-pin motherboard power connector. To the left of that connector are two 6-pin SLI connections, then you have the other two types of auxiliary power connections, the 8-pin and 4-pin. Finally, on the far left you have five connections for standard 4-pin drive connectors, and two SATA connectors. The only disappointment I have is that there are only two SATA power connections. However, as you will see below Ultra Products has included cables designed to give you three SATA connections.

The left image shows off the typical sticker panel which details the basic specifications, approvals, and so on. If you look closely at the sticker, you will see the 3.3V+ and 5V+ has a combined power output of 160W. I would like to see it provide more power to these rails, however if you are not overloading it, you should not have any issues. The image on the right shows off the rear of the PSU, where the squared openings allow for nearly unrestricted airflow. This will help the air from the fan flow right through and keep all the internal components as cool as possible.

Opening the cable box reveals the various FlexForce cables. The picture on the right shows all of the cables mentioned previously. Only two of the cables surprised me; the first being the fan cable, and the second is the short 4-pin molex to floppy connector. These two cables are helpful if you need those connections. Also, the 7.5in 4-pin drive cable is nice if you have an optical drive close to the rear of the power supply.

Most of the cables are made up of a single cable, with the appropriate ends. However, two of the motherboard power cables are actually two cables. Here you can see the 24-pin and the 8-pin power cables. At first I thought there was no physical reason for them to be separate cables, however once I started routing them I did notice that they would not remain together going around bends, so two separate cables is helpful during routing.
