Thermaltake Toughpower 550W Power Supply
March 16, 2006

A Closer Look:

We've seen the packaging and a brief look at the outside of this power supply, now let's see what makes it tick. One of the first things that stood out to me was the sleeved cabling. I have seen "sleeved cabling" done by other power supply manufacturers before, but none of them did nearly as quality a job as Thermaltake has done with this power supply.

Every cable down to the last inch has been wrapped in a fine black mesh. This not only makes for better air flow as described in the specifications, but also makes for an easier installation and a good looking case. Also notice that plenty of connectors are included with this power supply (this comes into play during installation). The picture on the right shows the ratings of the 550-Watt power supply.

The second thing that stood out to me was the airflow design contained in this power supply. The bottom of the supply is equipped with a large 120mm fan, and unlike most power supplies, the back of the case is just a screen to allow for unrestricted airflow.

Next we are going to do what every little kid longs to do, have a look inside. Voiding the warranty is something we as reviewers have the privilege of doing. So for those of you at home who want to participate in this activity, it isn't recommended, so just enjoy the pictures I have taken for you. As you probably already know, bigger is almost always better, and this rule applies in the power supply world. Things like large capacitors and heat sinks are what make power supplies stable. This is exactly what you would want to see from a power supply that will be put into a high demand system such as the SLI system the Toughpower 550 will be tested in.
