Stealth Switch Desktop Cloaking Device
March 06, 2006

Conclusion:

The Stealth Switch is definitely a novel device, and one that I can honestly say would be useful to many people I deal with on a regular basis. Using computers inappropriately (either personally or profesionally) is a part of life, and you probably aren't going to break the habits of most people out there. But you can change perception, and the Stealth Switch can help.

The product is well constructed and appears robust enough to withstand years of clicking into stealth mode. The outer appearance is fairly simple and in all black it may not attract too much attention sitting under your desk. The basic design makes me think it is in the mouse family... Perhaps a weasel due to its sneaky nature?

The Stealth Switch works quite well to cloak your desktop, but it is extremely important to remember to tap out of stealth mode and to not just launch new applications while still 'cloaked". Doing so will set you up for being busted the next time you try to hide your screen contents! Other than that issue, I think the device should be made to operate in silence. Even with the software sound effects turned off, the mechanical clicking sound made when depressed is rather noticable and could easily draw attention to what your feet are doing. At that point, somone may notice the switch and figure out what it is. In this case, I'm guessing the Stealth Switch may have caused more problems than it could have possibly prevented!

The Stealth Switch website lists a price of $39.95, but Crazy PC carries it for $29.95. For that price, if you really need something like this you can easily justify the investment. Even for those who don't need one, the price isn't too prohibitive to pick one up on a whim, or for a gift for that certain someone we all seem to know that could really use something like the Stealth Switch.

Pros:

» Designed well, solid construction
» Novel product
» Priced well to be an office gift (or gag gift)
» Maintain your privacy without looking suspicious

Cons:

» Should be quieter (the clicking noise might give you away)
» Failing to exit stealth mode properly can lead to big problems
» Will probably cause bigger problems for you once someone figures out what it is

Special thanks to Crazy PC for providing the Stealth Switch Desktop Cloaking Device to Bigbruin.com for review!
