Benchmarking (continued):

• D3D RightMark:

D3D RightMark is a fairly new benchmark (still in BETA release from Rightmark.org) and I thought I would give it a try for this review. According to their website "D3D RightMark is an independent non-commercial open-source graphics card benchmarking project" that can be used "to help users estimate graphics cards performance and quality in synthetic tests and real apps, e.g. games." There is a common interface that launches a batch of benchmarks that test various aspects of a video cards performance, and three of the results are presented below. All results are in terms of frames per second (higher is better)...

The first set of results are from the portion of the benchmark that tests the point sprite drawing speed. The MX440 could not complete this portion, and the V3XT lags a bit behind the more expensive cards.

The next set of results are from the portion of the benchmark that tests the pixel shader processing speed for PS 1.1, 1.4, 2.0, 2.0a, 3.0. Again, the older technology on the MX440 prevent it from running this test, and the V3XT again looks like a much stronger option, except when compared to the more expensive cards.

The final set of results from D3D RightMark are from the portion of the benchmark that tests the geometry processing speed for T&L FFP and VS 1.1, 2.0, 3.0. The V3XT was on a roll beating the MX440 by the simple fact that it was able to run and the MX440 wasn't. The MX440 eeked out a victory in this test.

• PowerDVD VGA Speed:

Kind of an offbeat benchmark, this one is included with the PowerDVD software suite, and can be used to benchmark 2D performance, as experienced in DVD playback. The results below are from the 'YUY2, Normal' and 'UYVY, Normal' portions and are in terms of frames per second (fps). The V3XT holds a solid edge over both nVidia based cards, but pales in comparison with the Radeon. You really only need 30 fps for solid DVD playback, so such extreme numbers are not needed (higher is better).
