Raidmax RX-9 ATX Gaming Case
January 24, 2006

Conclusion:

Overall, I really like the design of the Raidmax RX-9. There are some issues with the sample I received, and I would really like to think they are isolated incidents, especially considering Raidmax's reputation for producing quality cases. There are many things that Raidmax has done right with the RX-9.

Pictures do not do it justice, but the finish on the case is incredible! I would like to see more colors offered, though.

While I have identified a significant number of issues, the hard drive thermal lead would be the only issue I can say would definitely not be from any undetectable shipping damage. In my opinion, if the cable is designed to monitor a hard drive (as it is labeled) it should reach all possible hard drive locations, and preferably with some slack.

There are two issues with the fan controller, which are more related to my personal preference, and concern how the fan controller controls all three fan leads at one time, instead of individually. Some people might prefer all three fans to be controlled with one setting, but individual settings seems more appropriate. The second issue is that the fan speed is displayed as a % instead of RPM. I like to see the actual fan speed, and not an arbitrary percentage. I really can't take these into consideration for the final rating, as they are more personal preference than faults.

The Raidmax RX-9 can be found for around $89.99 online at places such as Newegg.com. This is very reasonable for what it includes.

This is a hard case to give a rating for. The design of the case alone would earn 5 out of 5 stars. However, taking the various issues into consideration I have to knock it down to 3 out of 5 stars. A hard thing to do knowing Raidmax's reputation and the typical quality of their cases. If I take Raidmax's reputation, and assume some of the issues are an isolated incident due to undetectable shipping damage, the score could easily go back up to 4 out of 5 stars.

Final Rating (3 out of 5 stars):

Pros:

» Unique design
» Beautiful metallic paint finish
» Remote control for fan speed and on/off

Cons:

» Hard drive thermal cable is too short.
» Faulty right speaker
» Hard drive/3.5" drive bay won't fit any devices
» Bottom 5.25" drive bays bent or not properly sized
» Side panels are hard to get off.
» Few sharp edges around the speaker grills
» Fan control is all three fan leads, not individual (personal preference)

Special thanks to Raidmax for providing the RX-9 ATX Gaming Case to Bigbruin.com for review!
