I would recommend the biggest fan possible. Bigger fans usually run at lower rpms and provide more airflow.
You need 100k potentiometer to control the speed of a fan. Search on google, and you'll find how to make a fan controller for like a buck or two. |

I grabbed the highest CFM Panaflos I could find. They were 12.99 each.
I got a Vantec Nexus fan controller. It was $16.55.
Anyway, Panaflo makes medium and low-noise fans too if you're not big on the controller deal. I'd really recommend the controller though. It could probably work with cheap fans too. |

Also check if it's linear, logarithmic/audio or reversed-log. You want a linear pot. It's going to be marked 100KB on it. (A for log, B for linear, C for reverse log)
It's only about $2 for one at RatShack.
Some fans are noisy because of poor blades or motor humming. Even a fan controller will not help in this case. There are ball bearing fans that, when turned manually, are harder to turn at specific spots. There are going to make lots of motor noise.
You should look for about 27dB or lower. |

Second on the panaflo. Running 3 in my machine
90mm L
80mm M on 7v
120mm M on 7v
Very pleased with the CFM-to-Noise, just not so pleased on the price!
