Latosta Portable Laptop Stand
February 23, 2009

In Use:

While the design seems like it may be universally compatible with just about any laptop computer, the website does list a handful of things to keep in mind when considering this product. This paragraph sums up the potential issues best:

For laptops with keyboard thickness (not including display) of 1 1/8" or less. The stand overlaps the top of the keyboard by 1/2", so it is generally not suitable for keyboards that have keys within 1/2" of the edge; see photo below. Not compatible with Apple Air or other laptops with beveled edges on the bottom of the keyboard. See FAQ for full compatibility guide.

I own three laptop computers, and I tried the Latosta portable laptop stand on all of them to see how it worked. First up is a MSI MS-1651. This is a 15" widescreen laptop barebones that I have equipped with an Intel P8400 dual core processor, 3GB or DDR2 memory, a 512MB Nvidia 9600M GT video card, and a 320GB Western Digital hard drive. The image below shows a top view, where the brackets can be seen wrapping around the edge of the laptop. The keyboard comes within a 1/2" of the edge, so you have to keep the laptop stand near the back edge, but it works rather well in this position. The angle created was comfortable to use, and the stand provide solid support to keep the laptop in place.

The next two images show the stand from below. Here we see that nothing was blocked by the stand, but it is quite possible to imagine the optical drive or USB ports being blocked on some configurations.

The next laptop I tested the stand on was an ASUS F7KR-X1. This is a 17" widescreen laptop with an AMD TK-55 dual core processor, 3GB of DDR2 memory, a 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD2400 video card, and a 120GB Samsung hard drive. The image below shows a top view where it looks like the stand is compatible, since the keyboard is more than a 1/2" from the edge.

The problem with this laptop and stand combination is that the bottom of the laptop is not flat, an issue detailed on Lightlaptopstands.com. The images below show that because of the beveled bottom surface of this laptop, the stand can not sit straight, and after just a few key strokes it will collapse.

The final laptop used for testing was an ASUS EEE PC 4G 701 netbook. This is a 7" widescreen laptop with a 900MHz Intel Celeron processor, 1GB of DDR2 memory, integrated video, and a 4GB solid stated drive. I did not expect the light laptop stand to work with this computer, and I was correct with my assumption. Not only is the keyboard too close to the edge, the laptop is just so small that it is difficult to avoid blocking the ports that cover both sides of the unit. The images below show that at least one key on either side will be depressed during use. If it weren't for that problem, the fit seemed pretty good and this would have made for a nice netbook accessory to have.

The stand was only compatible with one of the laptops I had on hand, but all of the issues I encountered are detailed on the Starlight Creations website. Anyone considering this product does need to check their system against the list of considerations provided before making a purchase.
