OCZ Technology PC3-10666 ReaperX HPC 2GB DDR3 Kit
January 15, 2008

Conclusion:

With the 6-5-5-18 timings, the OCZ Technology 2GB PC3-10666 ReaperX HPC DDR3 Dual Channel Memory Kit is very impressive right out of the package at 1333MHz. Testing showed that it can outperform other comparable memory with looser timings, providing a quick plug-and-play upgrade for those who aren't all that into overclocking and tweaking their BIOS.

As DDR3 speeds ramp up to 2000MHz, it will be interesting to see what, if any, other manufacturers venture into this lower latency area of "lower speed" DDR3. Hitting the high speeds found on some enthusiast grade kits can take some serious overclocking, patience, and a bit of luck; but the type of boost offered by this kit may make the extra effort just a bit less appealing. For those that feel the need for more than 2GB of system memory, OCZ Technology offers similar memory, with the same specifications, in a 4GB (2x2GB) kit!

With the large heatsinks, you need at least 2-3/4 inches above your DIMM sockets to accommodate the OCZ Technology 2GB PC3-10666 ReaperX HPC DDR3 Dual Channel Memory Kit. You will need to make sure your CPU cooler and other features inside your system won't interfere with the large heatsinks.

A search of PriceGrabber shows that there are two e-tailers stocking the kit tested, with prices starting at just under $300. Not bad, but checking at Newegg.com directly reveals you might be able to do much better sometime very soon. They are currently out of stock (ETA was listed as January 14, 2008), but their list price is $279.99 and a $30 mail in rebate would bring the total price down to $249.99 before shipping and tax.

Compared to DDR2 this is still much more expensive, but it is very competitively priced versus other 1333MHz DDR3 kits. If you like the style and specifications of this kit, but like your memory kits with double the capacity, Newegg.com also carries the 4GB kit for about $550!

OCZ Technology has been one of the best manufacturers of enthusiast grade memory for several years, and they have put together another great kit. The OCZ Technology 2GB PC3-10666 ReaperX HPC DDR3 Dual Channel Memory Kit is a stride in the right direction with tight timings that are starting to rival DDR2. Given the features, performance, and price, the 2GB PC3-10666 ReaperX HPC DDR3 Dual Channel Memory Kit earns the awards of "Highly Recommended" and "Great Idea".

Pros:

» Tight timings at 1333MHz
» Solid performance
» Lifetime warranty (1.9V EVP)
» Large heatsinks to reduce chip heat
» Heavy duty, well installed heatspreader
» Decent price for DDR3

Cons:

» Might have clearance issues with certain motherboard and CPU heatsink combinations

Special thanks to OCZ Technology for providing the OCZ Technology PC3-10666 ReaperX HPC 2GB DDR3 Kit to Bigbruin.com for review!
