Aeneon XTune 2GB DDR3-1600 Dual Channel Memory Kit

Testing (continued):

PassMark Performance Test v6.1 was the next benchmark executed. Only the memory portion of this suite of tests was used, and the composite "Memory Mark" value is presented as an overall indication of the performance of the three memory kits. Higher numbers are better for this unitless value.

Here we see that timings obviously don't have much bearing on PassMark's assessment of memory. The scores are all nearly identical, and the performance of the Aeneon kit actually decreased slightly when overclocked to 1700MHz.

3DMark Vantage was the next test to be executed. While gaming performance is far more dependent on things like the CPU and GPU, I wanted to see if the results would vary if those two factors were held fairly constant while the memory was changed. Keep in mind that the speed of the processor was about 3.2GHz (400MHz x 8) when the kits were run at 1600MHz and that the speed of the CPU was about 3.0GHz (425MHz x 7) when the Aeneon kit was overclocked to 1700MHz. The results below were executed in Performance mode with the display resolution set to 1280x1024.

What we see is that the Patriot Viper kit takes another victory, and that it is obviously difficult to compete with the tight timings. The Aeneon kit outperforms the Crucial kit in two of the three tests at 1600MHz, and when overclocked it comes very close to the scores achieved by the Patriot kit. Also of interest is that the CPU score increased by 74 Marks when the Aeneon kit was overclocked by 100MHz, despite the total speed of the CPU decreasing by 200MHz. Bus speed is obviously pretty important, since there was a net gain in the score despite the drop in clock speed.

The last test was to run through the benchmark built in to the game Track Mania Nations Forever. With settings on high, a resolution of 1280x1024, anti-aliasing set to 8x, and anisotropic filtering set to 8x, I set out to see how little impact memory would have on gaming performance.

Not much of a difference from kit to kit, but since I was expecting a completely flat line, the 2-3 fps you might pick up with this kit was somewhat interesting.
