PC Power and Cooling 750 Quad Black Power Supply
September 05, 2007

Packaging:

The PC Power and Cooling 750 Quad ships in the white box shown below. There is nothing flashy about it, but the bulk of the important details are provided. Inside the box, cardboard forms and bubble wrap are used to keep the components safe and secure.

There are a few sheets of paper included with power supplies from PC Power and Cooling, and these can be seen in the above right image. One is a fairly typical instruction manual / warranty card, while the other is something you will not find with most power supplies, a Certified Test Report generated specifically for the unit in the box. The two page report details a series of twelve tests the unit must pass, the criteria for passing, and the results achieved for this particular unit. In addition, the test date is indicated and it shows this one rolled out just about a week before it arrived in my hands... Ahh, fresh from the oven.

External Examination:

The PC Power and Cooling 750 Quad Black Power Supply comes in three variations; black, copper, and red (the Crossfire Edition). The images below show that the review sample is obviously the black version. The back side of the unit features an 80mm fan, an AC power connection, and a power switch. The opposite side has several slots for ventilation, as well as a large hole trimmed in plastic to keep it from abrading the thick bundle of mesh wrapped cables that provide DC power to the system's components. One thing I noticed before I actually got a good look at the finish was the weight. Lifting this out of the box made me realize it was heavier than any other unit I could remember, and while weight doesn't necessarily mean anything, it implies that it is packed with heavy duty components.

The balance of the Silencer 750's surfaces are fairly plain, and one of the few bits of color you will find is on a somewhat randomly located NVIDIA SLI logo provided to indicate that you can power multiple PCI Express graphics cards with this unit. While this unit might not attract attention with a glossy paint finish or vibrant LED lighting, I have a feeling that seeing the PC Power and Cooling label through the side of a window modded case might have an even more impressive effect. And if you really want to add a little punch to the all business appearance of this power supply, don't forget about the copper and red versions.

The data label is shown below, and it echoes the key information shown in the Features and Specifications portion of the review found on page one. Although listed previously, worth noting is that PC Power and Cooling doesn't play the game that other power supply manufacturer's play. Instead of marketing this unit by its peak power value, they use the continuous power value (and they do so at a more reasonable temperature of 40 degrees Celsius). The data label details both, showing that 750W is the maximum that can be supplied continuously, while 825W is the peak value.

One thing to consider is that the Silencer 750 is longer than the typical power supply (just over 7 inches deep versus about 6 inches). If you have a cramped case, or a setup where the optical drives or other internal features back up against the power supply area, you may have an issue installing a larger unit such as this.
