Ultra Products X-Finity 500W PSU with Active PFC
August 30, 2006

Testing (continued):

The next chart compares the load voltage readings of the Ultra Products X-Finity 500W PSU with Active PFC against the Ultra Products 2nd Generation X-Finity 600W PSU. It can be seen that the values between the two power supplies are virtually identical despite the differences in total power rating. All of the values are well within specification, and absolutely zero power issues were experienced during testing.

The final electrical test involved checking to see exactly how the two units from Ultra Products would differ when comparing their draw on the AC power outlet. A Seasonic Power Angel Power Monitor was connected between the power supplies and the wall outlet in order to monitor the values of W and VA while the systems were at idle and full load. The W figure references the AC power (in Watts) being drawn by the PSU, and the VA figure is the apparent power, the product of VxA (Volts multiplied by Amps).

As you can see, the Wattage is about the same for either power supply, about 155W at idle and about 330W at load. But, notice how the newer X-Finity 500W keeps the VA rating equal to the W value, while the 600W unit sees this value soar. From idle to load, the VA value nearly doubles on the non-PFC 600W version! With the Voltage remaining about the same (between 115.5 and 118.0) that means that the Amperage is what is soaring from around 2 Amps at idle to over 4 Amps under load. The Ultra Products X-Finity 500W PSU with Active PFC manages to keep the Amperage value right around 2 Amps.

As a final point of testing, I tried to check out the noise that the 135mm fan created. It is definitely quiet, and borders on silent. Although you will probably never have your head next to your power supply during operation, that is about what it took for me to hear it. The air coming out the back wasn't overwhelming, but there was a decent flow, and it stayed cool except while under the heaviest of load.
